September is Suicide Prevention Awareness Month

Now that we are in September, we recognize this month as Suicide Prevention Awareness Month—a crucial time for us to come together as a community and support our students in understanding the importance of mental health and seeking help when needed.

Our theme this month is:
“Start a Conversation. Be the Difference.”
With one conversation—asking someone how they’re really doing and being ready to truly listen—we can save lives. Because here’s what we know: No one has to face this alone. Help exists. Healing is possible. And all it can take is one person to start a conversation.

Our goal is to create an environment where students feel safe, supported, and empowered to reach out if they are struggling.

To support our students, we encourage you to incorporate conversations and activities in your classrooms that promote empathy, understanding, and awareness around mental health. Here are a few ideas:

  • Classroom Discussions: Engage students in conversations about mental health, emphasizing that asking for help is a sign of strength. Use the phrases “Start a Conversation. Be the Difference.” and “No Judgment, Just Help” to reinforce this message.

  • Share Support Resources: Make sure students know where to find help—within our school and the wider community. Provide information on counselors, hotlines, and other resources. For crisis situations, please email West Counseling & Support immediately.

  • Create Safe Spaces: Foster an environment where students feel comfortable sharing their thoughts and feelings. Encourage open dialogue and remind them that support is always available.

  • Use Educational Materials: Take advantage of resources that address mental health and suicide prevention. If you need help finding materials, please reach out to the counseling department.

As the school year begins, if you’d like a quick way to introduce well-being topics, I also have a link with basics on stress management that you can share with your students. Just let me know, and I’ll send it your way.

If you have any additional ideas or resources that could strengthen our efforts, we would love to hear from you. Together, we can make a meaningful impact and ensure every student knows that reaching out for help is a brave and supported choice.

Thank you for your dedication to this important cause and for continuing to make our school a safe and inclusive space for all students.

Warm regards,
West Counseling Team ðŸ™‚
